What is Specialty Coffee?

"Specialty coffee refers to the highest-quality green coffee beans roasted to their greatest flavor potential by true craftspeople. It has no defects and has a distinctive flavor in the cup." -Specialty Coffee Association of America

Coffee is grown around the world, generally between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. There are two types of green coffees - robustas and arabicas. Robustas, the most common, are grown at a low altitude and give a high yield. They are commonly used in commercial blends. Arabicas, on the other hand, are grown at higher altitudes and are hand-picked at their peak. The fruit of a single tree yields only 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of coffee per year. The Arabica bean has greater flavor and aroma than the Robusta bean. It also has less caffeine. Arabica beans come in several grades of coffee based on defects and the bean sizes. Only 5-10% of Arabica beans are considered specialty grade.

Freshness is important to specialty coffee. Alakef Coffee custom roasts only specialty grade coffee beans to order. This ensures that you receive the freshest and highest quality coffee possible. The process by which the coffee is brewed also plays a large role in delivering the best cup of coffee. The right ratio of coffee to water, the proper grind, water temperature and other elements are all a part of brewing the perfect cup. When you receive a cup of specialty coffee, you can be sure the greatest care has been given, from origin of the coffee to your cup, to ensure you receive only the best coffee.
